The JSOM is a quarterly peer-reviewed journal (a must in medical literature), and indexed with the National Library of Medicine (PubMed – the sole internationally recognized index for peer-reviewed medical literature). It is also indexed in the Library of Congress.
The JSOM is the preeminent medical journal dedicated to the education and training specific to those that practice unconventional medicine. This accomplishment occurred over 10 years of dedicated contributions by our physicians, medics, and readers. The JSOM is the only medical journal that exists specifically for Special Operations Forces (SOF) medical professionals, and allows a forum for world-wide contribution and discussion. The ability to identify, propose, and debate issues through professional writing is invaluable to SOF medics worldwide. Additionally, their professional development, both officer and NCO alike, is enabled through the JSOM. The JSOM is the most practical and popular journals in tactical, operational, and clinical medicine as it updates the medical providers on new and current trends in the field of Special Operations medical care and equipment, an essential component of delivering evidence-based medicine.
The JSOM transcends the boundary between military and civilian medicine by bringing forth practical ideas and techniques to the TEMS providers currently operating in the law enforcement environments. The journal coordinates the military’s SOF, Department of Justice and local SWAT Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) providers together in one forum to promote the sharing of knowledge of the very unique tradecraft in which they have trained so hard to be proficient. It provides invaluable, current information that saves lives on both urban and foreign battlefields. The JSOM is the premiere arena for Special Operations medical personnel to communicate successes, advances, and lessons learned in caring for Soldiers in theaters of combat; without it, the opportunity to advance combat casualty care through peer-review is fractured. Additionally, the rest of the military and civilian tactical medicine, as well as many host nation civilians look to the JSOM for the most cutting-edge interventions and experiences to implement in their own practices and benefit from the diffusion of medical knowledge imparted by the JSOM.
WHY THE JSOM NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT
Eleven years ago, the JSOM was created by the Surgeons office of the United States Special Operations Command, as an official forum for professional discourse on global Special Operations medicine and to advance the practice of the SOF Medics. It remains the only professional peer-reviewed publication for the specific mission of SOF medical personnel, and is the best resource for medics on the ground in austere environments. The JSOMs mission is to always provide the most current evidence needed for SOF medics to care for Soldiers, in any place, anywhere in the world. In addition to the journal, a pocket-sized annual Tactical Medical Emergency Protocol Supplement is published. This training supplement is a pocket-sized quick reference carried by the medics to aid them in a critical lifesaving situation.
In May 2010, the Department of Defense made tough budgetary decisions, and funding for the JSOM, and its editor, were part of the budget cuts. Despite this obstacle, a handful of passionate volunteers are flying solo and personally supporting the production of the Journal, to keep it published and in the hands of the Soldiers who need it most. The JSOM is now dependent on funding from sponsorship, advertising, and subscriptions. We have every confidence that the JSOM will survive and thrive, as long as we remain committed to its success.

Federal and local TEMS providers face similar, military-style threats and severe mechanisms-of-injury (MOI) in the urban battle space. Traditional law enforcement entities can no longer out-gun shooters; they require SOF-specific knowledge and evidence regarding wound ballistics, trauma, and severe MOI, which results in the need for advanced trauma management. The JSOM is a critical leading force in getting this information out to these medical providers.
